RRAC Strikes Again

Twilight SerenadeMore than 140 music lovers flocked to the Springdale Road Twilight Serenade on January 17, where they enjoyed an array of music as the sun set before star attraction, tenor Jay Weston, held them spell bound with his soaring vocals.
Talented young Esperance musicians Hailee Blackburn and Isaak Puna warmed up the larger-than-expected crowd, the size of which forced them to pump up the volume. Hailee’s gorgeously emotive voice was well accompanied by Isaak across several sets before the duo made way for the Hopetoun Choir.
Perth music teacher Jean Bourgault , who rehearsed the singers during the Hopetoun summer festival singing workshop earlier that week,  led the choir in place of usual conductor Richenda Goldfinch, who relished the chance to join in the singing.
Swelled by several participants from the workshop, the choir members sang their hearts out over a three-song set, went on to perform their encore piece, and sat down to cries for more.
Gourmet platters, curries, and several glasses of wine later, the audience was enraptured by the dulcet tones of Weston, who showed his versatility in the first half of his performance, singing New York cabaret-style songs to rock/pop.
Isaak Puna and Hailee BlackburnDuring the second half of the show, and a change of clothes later, Weston really hit his stride, singing the operatic and musical theatre songs that best showcase his impressive voice
Jay WestonWeston enjoyed a warm, flirty rapport with the crowd, bantering about the pesky mozzie zapper that zinged through the first half of his performance and becoming brave enough to risk approaching the audience through the garden.
He delighted Springdale Courtyard Café owner Mary Richardson by singing her request, and was rewarded with warm kisses on the cheek.
Finally, there was the awaited and divine Nessun Dorma.  Then the encore. The crowd went wild and wouldn’t let Weston leave. Calls for Mustang Sally were answered with Weston taking to the piano while the crowd took to the floor, rocking the courtyard.
The Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council event was a magical night. We didn’t want it to end.
The RRAC provide an annual program of events each year for the enjoyment of the Ravensthorpe Shire and is financially supported by Country Arts WA, Lotterywest, Department of Culture and the Arts and most importantly a few hardworking volunteers.
